Making Connections

Saturday, August 15, 2009

What has stood out more than anything on our China trip is the students' strong desire to connect with other people. They wanted to know the people we encountered whether it was our tour guides, the Shaolin monks or classroom children at kung fu school. At our next to last dinner the kids were thrilled when the young monks and school instructors ate with us. More than anything they enjoyed finding common ground. They also learned how life is different. Truly a rewarding experience for me as a teacher.

Your team, students and teachers, left a rich digital legacy. I have so enjoyed reading and commenting on all the teachers' and students' blogs, and I miss all of you. You are so correct in stating that this trip was about connections; the students' excitement in making new friends and the teachers' encouragement doing the same gave this trip a special stamp. Truly, it was a joy to look forward to your posts. Your students were certainly excellent ambassadors at every level--for our country, their families, school districts, and Discovery Education. What an amazing group of students who truly understand global citizenship and have left behind a new permanent record that makes us proud.

I found that the most rewarding part of my trip was the connection I made with the people of South Africa. My students talk about the shark diving and the other adventures, but it is the people of South Africa that they talk about the most.
